Sleepless Nights Ahead As Coaches, Players, Parents, Prepare For Tryouts
The week of tryouts is always a hectic one for coaches, players, and parents. While many of the players and coaches have gone through a fall season and a workout program, not many have endured what the actual season will bring and it all starts on Monday when tryouts begin.
The best programs in Broward County make an almost seamless transition from the fall to the spring season. With coaches now allowed to be around their players year-round, there are few surprises when it comes to a new high school season.
In the old days, players would join all different leagues in the summer and fall, but that was so nineties. Now, it is common amongst the best programs for their teams to play together year round. The constant instruction and camaraderie has led to an increase in the level of team play in recent seasons.
While the adjustment will be easier on the coaches and players, it is the families of these coaches and players that will have to do the most compromising come Monday. Instead of workouts and after school practice being done at five, it now is backed up to six thirty or later.
In addition, a majority of high school programs now have lights, meaning that most games are played at night. In these scenarios, the players and coaches can be away from the house from before school, until ten or eleven at night.
The preparation for all of hectic hours that will come with the next few months has already began. Tonight, players are dreaming about that first swing, or the first time they step on the mound. That brings excitement, and quite a few increased heartbeats at the bedtime hour.
For coaches, the last couple of days are about making sure tryout plans are in place, working on the field to give the best possible appearance when the bell rings Monday, and finalizing any coaching strategies that have have to be discussed with new members of their staff.
For parents, it is much simpler, spend some last quality hours with their children before they go off to the abyss until late April. The parents of returning players always handle this time the best, with new players and parents just hoping they do that one little thing that allows them to spend the next few months on the baseball field.
High school baseball in Broward County returns on Monday, and for all those giddy with anticipation, enjoy. Hopefully, this will be a season for the ages.
