Cardinal Gibbons – Coral Springs Christian Game Ends In Tie
Darkness fell on Tuesday afternoon’s game between Cardinal Gibbons and Coral Springs Christian resulting in a tie game. The game was called during the top half of the seventh and by rule the game reverted back to the end of the sixth when the score was tied 7-7.
The scoring got started early for Coral Springs as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first on just one hit. Leadoff batter, Kevin Knapp, was hit by a pitch and was followed by two quick outs. Cleanup hitter Zach Butler walked and was followed by an RBI single from Dominic Ferrusi. An error by the center fielder allowed pinchrunner Luke Bramos to score from first.
Gibbons answered with one of their own in the top half of the second to make it a 2-1 game. Ryan Whaley was hit by a pitch and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Richard Lang.
Coral Springs added two more runs in the third without a hit. Knapp and Derek Barra both walked to start the inning and a double steal put runners at second and third with no outs. Knapp scored on a sacrifice fly by three-hole hitter Kyle Pitts and Barra scored on a wild pitch.
The Chiefs tied the score at four with a three run inning in the fourth. Whaley hit a one-out homerun to left field to make it a 4-2 contest. He was followed by a bunt single from Jordan Selbach who stole second and scored on a single from Joey Schifani.
The starting pitcher for Cardinal Gibbons, Tyler Norris, had a double to tie the game in the fourth. On the mound he worked into the third inning allowing four runs on one hit and four walks.
The Chiefs took the lead for the first time in the top half of the fifth. Jack Crittenberger led the inning off with a walk and stole second. Designated hitter Jimmy Noonan scored Crittenberger on a single and later scored on a two-run single by Selbach.
Pitts and Butler led the bottom half of the fifth off with back to back double’s making it a 7-5 game heading into the top half of the sixth. Norris led the sixth off with a single and was picked off. The next two batters struck out.
Coral Springs tied the game with their last at-bat, scoring two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single by firstbasemen Billy Atkins led to a run scored on an error by the rightfielder for Gibbons. Barra scored Knapp on a sacrifice fly for the games final score.
Cardinal Gibbons scored three more runs in the top half of the seventh before the game was called due to darkness.
