Douglas Pitchers Shine In Shutting Down Cardinal Gibbons’ Bats
In front of a partisan crowd of over 100 fans, the Douglas Eagles administered a 7-0 shutout over the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs yesterday afternoon at Douglas Field.
Staff ace Jonathan Lipinski, yielded a scant single while recording a pair of strike outs in his three inning stint. ” I was very pleased with Jonathan, ” said Eagles Head Coach Dean Florio. Assistant Coach Elliot Bonner added, “He’s (Lipinski) always in there and he’s only going to get better.”
Lipinski was followed on the mound by a trio of relief pitchers, Jacob Lennertz, Patrick Kulick and Danny Payton, who combined in tossing four more scoreless frames while allowing two harmless infield singles.
“We started off a little slow,” said Coach Bonner, “The boys played well today. We fielded, we hit, we actually did what we had to do.”
Douglas’ bats produced only seven hits, however, five were for extra bases. Lead off hitter, Louis Silvero drilled an RBI double to deep LCF in the third. Colton Bottomly doubled down the left field line and came around to score on an error and a passes ball in the fourth, upping the score to 3-0. The Eagles put the game on ice with four more runs in the fifth, as junior second baseman Chri Pannell crushed a Tyler Norris fastball over the LCF fence. Brandon Raaf also lined a two-run double to CF in the inning.
“Some of the hitting surprised me,” said coach Florio .
Gibbons’ bats were quiet all afternoon, but staff ace, junior Thomas Woodrey, flashed some brilliance on the mound, fanning three of the first four batters he faced in hurling two scoreless frames. Woodrey is bring touted as a possible Division I or pro prospect.
Lipinski picked up the win for Douglas and Michael Hanke takes the lose for Gibbons.
