Fellerman, Quintana Lead Western To Victory Over Taravella
Western beat Taravella Tuesday night, 2-0, with the help of left-handed starting pitcher Josh Fellerman and starting third-baseman, Hebert Quintana.
Fellerman went five strong innings striking out eight and walking only one to earn the win, and Quintana knocked in the only two runs in the game.
Western’s offense started slow, not getting a base hit until the bottom of the third inning with a single to center field by left-fielder, Doug Futch. Futch later scored in the inning after stealing second and moving to third on a fielders choice. Quintana drove Futch in with a line-drive single off of the pitcher’s glove for the game’s second and final run scored.
Leadoff batter for Western, Kyle Harrington, walked his first time up and Tyler Fichter, pinchrunner for the catcher Harrington, scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Quintana.
“We had some situations where we thought we could get some hits but didn’t, and it will come,” Western Head Coach Sonny Hansley said. “I think we have a pretty good hitting team but didn’t really show that tonight.”
Fellerman gave up hits to two of the first three Taravella batters then settled down, allowing just one hit and one walk over his final four innings of work for his first win of the year. Fellerman struck out five straight batters from the first to third inning, striking out the side in the second. Five of his eight strikeouts were the result of the batter looking at the called third strike.
“That is what we were expecting out of him,” Hansley said of his starting pitcher,”he was efficient with his pitches.”
Ryan Lindsay came on to pitch the final two innings and escaped trouble in both the sixth and seventh innings to earn the save. Taravella stranded four guys on base the last two innings. Lindsay struck out the final batter of the game, with men on second and third, to secure Western’s home opener.
For Taravella, starting pitcher, Jonathan Hurst, went two innings, striking out two and walking three, allowing one run. Hurst gave way to Andrew Forest who went four strong innings allowing just one run to keep Taravella within striking distance. Forest struck out five without walking a batter, he also added a single in the seventh to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Both teams finished with five hits as pitching for both teams lead the way. Lead-off batter for Taravella, Jordan Gleisher, lead the way offensively going 1-3 with a single to center field in the first and a walk in the sixth. For Western, Kyle Perry went 1-3 with a stolen base.
