Meyer Brothers Combine For No-Hitter In Sheridan Hills Win
Sheridan Hills pitcher Chris Meyer cruised through four innings against Posnack Thursday afternoon, striking out five, but more importantly, giving up no hits. That is why it seemed peculiar to Meyer when Head Coach Paul Barrios told his starting pitcher that he would not be going back out for the fifth inning.
Barrios instead turned to Meyer’s brother, Ronnie, to close out the game. The elder Meyer came in and slammed the door on Posnack, completing the no-hitter and the 11-0 district win. Afterwards, Barrios explained the decision to pull one Meyer for the other.
“The way I got him (Chris) to come out, was I told him his brother was coming in,” said Barrios. “So he said that was OK. If it was anybody else, he wasn’t going to let me do it.”
The Sharks offense also did their part in the mercy rule win. Jedidiah Wilson drove in three runs in the first three innings on a pair of singles. The big inning for Sheridan Hills was the fifth when they sent eleven batters to the plate and scored seven runs to put the game away. Lead-off hitter Marquis Rodriguez scored the innings first run and stole two bases during the frame.
Barrios understood that this was just one game for a youthful team that at times will be inconsistent, but today, the Sharks head coach felt good about what he saw.
“We’re still young, and we’ve got some players we’re plugging in the lineup. We’ve seen a lot of good things from the underclassmen. The future looks good at Sheridan Hills.”
Coming into the game, it was Posnack that looked better on paper. The Rams were 2-0 on the young season, while Sheridan Hills was 1-2. After winning their first district match up of the year, the Sharks were feeling better about themselves after the game.
“It feels really good,” said starting and winning pitcher Meyer. “Our hitters hit the ball real well, and we just have to stay confident.”
Sheridan Hills will not get much time to savor Thursday’s win as they will be back in action on the road this afternoon against Horeb Christian.
We are proud of you Christopher and Ronnie. Keep up the great work! Whew- I see scholarships around the corner!
