Richman Throws His Second No-Hitter Of The Week For Pompano
Ryan Richman threw the season opener against Coconut Creek on Monday for the Pompano Beach Golden Tornadoes, and when that game ended, Richman had himself his first no-hitter of the year. The Pompano starter only threw fifty-nine pitches in the outing, and if not for a lead-off error, he would have had a perfect game.
With the outing against Creek so short, Pompano Head Coach, George Petik, decided to roll the dice with Richman again on Thursday. This time it was against Northeast, and again, Richman responded with a no-hitter.
Starting for the Golden Tornadoes for the second time this week was a feat in itself, but throwing a second no-hitter was something special.
Pompano won the game 20-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule shortened game and Richman had to work a little harder than he did against Creek. On this day Northeast batters forced him to throw sixty pitches, one whole pitch more than he threw on Monday. Petik insisted that the decision to bring Richman back tonight was an easy one.
“He only threw fifty-nine pitches on Monday,” said Petik, “He only went to one three ball count, it was like throwing a bullpen session. So really it was a no-brainer to bring him back tonight.”
The offense for Pompano also showed up on Thursday. Jared Sundook went 2-3 with a triple, a home run, and three RBIs. Sudook was joined by Nick Delgado in the home run club. Delgado’s blast was his only hit on the evening, but he also had 3 RBIs. The Golden Tornadoes totaled eleven hits in the game and were helped by four Hurricanes errors, all contributing to their twenty runs.
“We hit the ball well,” said Petik.
It was the second time this week that Pompano mercy-ruled an opponent. On Monday, they defeated Coconut Creek 14-0. For the week, Pompano went 3-0, sandwiching an 18-5 victory over Coral Glades between the two no-hitters.
Next week will get tougher for the Golden Tornadoes as they face district rival Pine Crest on Tuesday. The winner of that game will take an early lead in District 14-3A.
