Steady Pitching Carries Somerset To Victory Friday Night
Somerset Academy beat Westminster Academy 7-0 Friday night to bring their record to 2-0. Timely hitting and steady pitching throughout the game was the key for Somerset’s victory.
On the mound, freshmen starter Casey Garcia went five solid innings to earn the win. Garcia scattered five hits while striking out four and walking just one.
“Casey threw strikes, kept the ball low and changed speeds pretty well, and that kept us in the game early on,” said Somerset Head Coach Onel Garcia.
Sophomore Chris Medina pitched the final two innings to preserve the shutout. Medina worked out of a little jam in the sixth after a hit batter and a walk, by striking out the final batter of the inning. He went on to strike out the first two batters in the seventh and the game ended on a fly ball out to the left fielder.
Offensively, Somerset got on the board in the second with two runs on just one hit. After leaving the bases loaded in the third, the big hit, a two-run home run by the catcher, and three hole hitter, Kevin Abraham, gave Somerset some breathing room.
“Kevin Abraham had a big hit, he’s been hitting the ball well,” said Garcia of his three hitter.
Somerset added three more runs in the sixth via three hits and two walks. The first batter of the inning struck out and was followed by a walk. Back to back hits then pushed across the fifth run of the game. The big hit of the inning came of the bat of Andrew Denis, a two-run single to finish off the scoring for Somerset.
As for Westminster, starting pitcher Daniel D’Onofrio went 2 2/3 innings pitched for the loss, giving up two runs. He gave way to Zach Dudas, coming in from right field, in the third, and Dudas escaped the bases loaded jam by striking out the only batter he faced in the inning. Dudas finished with 2 1/3 innings pitched in relief allowing just two hits, one being the home run in the fourth.
Zach Gonzalez pitched 1/3 of an inning and Will Buschman went 2/3 of and inning, while Daniel Burns pitched the seventh to round out the night on the mound for Westminster.
Offensively, Westminster tallied five hits. Lead-off batter Matt Friend went 1-2 with a double to left center and a pair of walks. Designated hitter Joey Knight added a hit and walk and James Cote had a bunt single.
Somerset tallied their seven runs on just seven hits. Lead-off batter Milton Ramos went 1-2 with a walk and hit by pitch and also scored two runs.
