Timely Hits Mark Coral Glades’ Victory Over University School
The Coral Glades Jaguars topped the University Suns 5-4 in a hard fought and well played season opener for both teams at Deerfield Beach High School yesterday afternoon.
Winning head coach, Jorge Miranda was pleased with, “the playoff atmosphere.” The Jaguars head coach said he liked what he saw out there, then added, “we have plenty of work to do.”
After allowing an an unearned run in the top of the first, University School countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning as Jon Jon Cormier singled in Diego Perez, who was on base via a walk.
Glades’ senior shortstop Oliver Christensen drove a ball to the center field fence with two on and two out, breaking the 1-1 tie in the top of the third inning.
University School put up a three spot in the bottom half of the inning, to take a short lived 4-3 lead. The big hits were Perez’s RBI double and Charlie Gomez’s RBI single.
Once again, Glades rebounded with a pair of runs of their own. Derek Grider drove in what proved to be the game winner with a two out RBI single in the fourth that closed out the scoring.
“Our two out hits were big today,” said Miranda.
The Jaguars defense came up big as center fielder Grider made two outstanding catches. His two out shoe string catch of Cormier’s sinking liner with a runner on second base prevented the tying run from scoring in the fifth. Left fielder Alex Klein started that inning by snaring a screaming liner off the bat of Perez.
Glades’ closer, Brandon Texiera picked up the save with a dominating performance as he retired the side on strikes in the seventh. Austin McMahon got the win, allowing two runs in three innings of relief.
