Tuesday Blowouts Highlighted By McArthur’s Segula No-Hitter
Tuesday was D-Day for many high school programs around Broward County. The top teams in the county faced off with some of the teams that have become known for their ineffectiveness, and it resulted in plenty of blowouts.
The day was highlighted by McArthur’s Dylan Segula. The Mustangs pitcher tossed a five-inning no-hitter against Hollywood Hills. Segula and his teammates turned nine Spartans errors into twenty-one runs in the days most lopsided game. Hollywood Hills batters struck out nine times, as Segula threw the third no-hitter of the young season in Broward.
The Spartans were one of ten teams that were beat by at least ten runs on Tuesday. It is never pretty when the county’s best teams face off against young and inexperienced teams, and that was never more evident than yesterday.
Deerfield Beach traveled to Coconut Creek and came away with a 14-1 district victory. It was a win that the Bucks desperately needed after losing their district opener to Douglas last week. Monarch also won their first district game of 2011, beating Boyd Anderson 11-1.
Calvary Christian rebounded from a rough finish in the Falcons Nike/OTS Challenge, beating Sagemont 11-0. The Eagles almost matched McArthur’s feat of throwing a no-hitter, but they had to settle for a one-hitter in the blowout.
Flanagan, South Broward, and Western all had double-digit wins, as did Nova and Piper. Somerset did not win by ten, but they did improve their record to 3-0 with an 11-5 win over Pope John Paul II.
