Archbishop Rebounds From No-Hitter With Offensive Explosion In 15-7 Win
On Monday evening, Archbishop McCarthy hitters experienced failure for one of the only times this season. The Mavericks were no-hit by Columbus, and the hitter did not have much time to think about those at-bats. Tuesday Archbishop was back in action against St. Brendan in the Selective Recruiting Invitational, and the offense was out for redemption.
McCarthy hitters piled up fifteen hits, seven of which went for extra bases, and the Mavericks rebounded from only their second loss of the season a day earlier by defeating the Sabres 15-7.
Archbishop was led by Jose Brizuela, Ivan Santos, and Garret Kennedy, each with three hits. Santos did the most damage, hitting two doubles and a home run, while scoring three runs. Brizuela added two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Kennedy’s hits were all singles, but they produced two runs.
Head Coach Rich Bielski was pleased with the way his offense rebounded from the no-hitter thrown against them the day before.
“We made some adjustments, hit a lot more balls on the ground instead of in the air and we got a lot more line drives and ground ball base hits.” said Bielski. ” I’m very proud of the boys.”
The final score was not indicative of how the game played out early. The Mavericks jumped on St. Brendan starting pitcher Oswald Silvestre for five runs in the second inning, but the Sabres did not crack. In the top of the third, Miguel Ceballos highlighted a four run inning with a three run homer to left.
Ryan Castellanos worked into another jam in the fourth after his offense gave him a 7-4 lead in the top of the inning. Castellanos gave up two runs on three hits and his second homer of the game. He escaped the inning with the Mavericks still clinging to a one run lead.
Archbishop put the game away in the seventh when they sent nine batters to the plate and put up a six spot, moving the score to 15-6. Nick Travieso, who had previously struck out three times in the game, joined the hit parade with one swing. Travieso hit a towering two run homer to left, closing the scoring on the evening for the Mavericks.
Again, McCarthy will not have much time to reflect on the game as they face traditional Miami powerhouse Westminster Christian on Wednesday night.
