Coral Springs Scores Three In The Eighth To Beat Coral Glades
The Coral Springs Colts had a rough week over spring break, losing three of four games in the Sarasota Classic tournament. The Colts continued their resurgence, however, on Thursday with an 8-5, extra-inning win over district rival Coral Glades.
Coral Springs had already defeated another district foe, Monarch, on Tuesday, and the win over Coral Glades all but assured the Colts of at least a number two seed when the District 10-6A tournament begins next month.
Early in the game, things were not looking so good for the Colts. After scoring one run in the first, Coral Springs was clinging to the lead when starter Brett Schneider was pulled after two innings of shutout ball. Alex Demicco relieved Schneider and continued the shutout into the fourth, when the Jaguars tied the game on a single by Frank Rodriguez and a throwing error by Colts center-fielder Lewis Brinson.
Coral Springs took the lead again in the fifth, scoring two runs on one hit. Demicco drove in one of those runs with an RBI ground out to second base. From there, it looked as though the Colts would cruise, but they ran into trouble with two outs in the sixth.
Rodriguez was hit by a pitch after two quick outs to start the bottom of the sixth. Greg Farber then singled, setting the stage for Matt Grey’s dramatic, three-run homer, giving the Jaguars a 4-3 lead heading to the final frame.
Coral Springs would tie the game in the seventh when Justin Mixon hit a double to lead-off the inning, followed by Dylan Ebel’s base hit bunt while trying to sacrifice Mixon to third. Demicco flew out to right, plating Mixon with the tying run.
The score stayed the same until the eighth, when the Colts produced three runs. Mixon again provided the big hit with a triple, driving in the go-ahead run. Ebel added his third hit of the night, and also scored in the inning. Mixon, one of the youngest players on the team, described what it was like to get back on track after his team’s disappointing showing in Sarasota.
“We were kind of upset with how we performed in the Sarasota tournament,” said Mixon. “But what we kind of did was get back to our field and get back into our practice routine, and tonight it paid off.”
For Coral Glades, Thursday’s defeat was the sixth straight loss for the program, but Head Coach Jorge Miranda believes that the team is only a play or two away from having a winning record during this tough stretch, and Thursday he gave credit to his team’s opponent.
“Springs is not going to go away,” said Miranda. “They are not a team that is afraid when they’re down one run. It’s a team that is gonna compete, and they capitalized on our mental mistakes and our physical mistakes, and they found a way to win.”
