Long Ball Hurts Chaminade In 13-4 Loss To Doral

Chaminade Madonna came into their game against Doral with an opportunity to move into second place in District 15-3A. Unfortunately, Lions pitchers had trouble keeping the ball in the park, resulting in a 13-4 loss.

The trouble for Chaminade starter Chris Flores began in the second inning when he walked the Firebirds first two hitters. That brought center-fielder Angel Ortiz to the plate, and with one powerful swing, Ortiz put Doral up 3-0. Flores then settled down and got the next three batters in order.

In their half of the second, the Lions threatened, putting two runners on base with one out, but Manny Rodriguez flew out to center and Kevin Nader grounded out to end the threat. Nader did later score the Lions first run of the game in the fifth.

The power display continued in the Firebirds fourth. Javy Garcia hit the second home run of the game for Doral, increasing their lead to 5-0 at the time. In the fifth, Flores struggled with his control, walking three batters in the inning. Ortiz was again the big run producer with a three RBI triple. The hit ended Flores’ day on the mound.

The Firebirds put the game away in the sixth with four more runs, upping the score to 13-2. A three-run homer highlighted the inning, and sent Chaminade scrambling for runs in the bottom of the frame in order to try and avoid a mercy-run rule finish.

The Lions did respond to the challenge, plating two in the sixth. Sly Edwards drove in two with a double to right, his second two base hit of the game. From there, Chaminade could muster no more offense.

The Lions fell to 7-6 overall, and more importantly, 1-2 in the district. The district is one of the few that combines Broward and Miami-Dade teams. Currently, LaSalle, Monsignor Pace, and Doral sit one, two, and three in the standings. Chaminade slipped to fourth with the loss.
