Offensive Attack Leads Archbishop McCarthy Over Calvary Christian
Archbishop McCarthy defeated Calvary Christian at home on a cool, breezy Tuesday night. The 11-4 win brings the Mavericks record to 6-1 on the season and the loss drops Calvary to 3-3-1.
For Archbishop, a strong outing from staff ace Andre Martinez shut down the Calvary Christian offense through four innings. Martinez had eight strikeouts and one walk while allowing just three hits.
“Andre’s given us quality starts all season long and that’s what we expect out of our ace,” said Archbishop Head Coach Rich Bielski after the game. “He was hitting his locations very well and kept their hitters off balance, and they have some real good hitters in that lineup.”
Offensively, Archbishop scored their eleven runs on twelve hits. They left the bases loaded in the first, but went on to score in every inning for the rest of the game.
After a lead-off walk, a sacrifice bunt, and two consecutive walks, Archbishop shortstop Nick Basto hit a two-run double down the third base line to break the ice. He was followed by a RBI double from Alex Fernandez to make it a 3-0 game.
After a strikeout and a walk, Ivan Santos had a two-out two RBI single. Up for the second time in the inning, catcher Garrett Kennedy had a RBI single to make it a 6-0 game after two.
Martinez left the bases loaded in the top half of the third while striking out the side and the Mavericks came back with one more run in the bottom of the third on a RBI triple from Fernandez.
Martinez again struck out the side in the fourth after a lead-off single, completing a strong outing while registering the win.
Chris Thompson led the bottom of the fourth off with a single and later stole third and scored on an error by the Calvary third baseman. Thompson also added a RBI single in the fifth.
The Eagles got on the board in the sixth with a three run inning. A lead-off walk, followed by a hit batter, brought starting pitcher Seth Natal to the plate with one out. He hit a chopper over the third baseman for the first run, and the other two runs scored on a fielders choice and a balk.
Back to back singles by Kennedy and Martinez and two more errors for Calvary led to two more runs for Archbishop in their half of the fourth.
“Proud of the boys, we’ve been hitting the ball a lot better than we started the season and we hit the ball well again tonight” said Bielski.
Calvary added one more run in the seventh on a single from Tyler Middlebrooks, followed by a RBI double from Dalton Dinatale making the final 11-4.
For Calvary, Natal started on the mound and went three innings for the loss. Emilio Desilva finished the game on the mound working the final three innings. At the plate, Taylor Gushue went 2-3 with a hit by pitch.
Ryan Castellanos went two innings and Eric White pitched the seventh striking out the side, to close out the win for Archbishop
At the plate, Fernandez finished 3-4 with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Thompson finished 2-2 with two walks, an RBI, and a stolen base. Kennedy went 3-3 with an RBI and a walk.
