Silvero Powers Douglas To 3-1 Win Over Coral Glades
Last week, it was Luis Silvero, Douglas’ number nine hitter that was the hero for the Eagles. This week, it was brother Louis Silvero that provided the heroics in a district match up with Coral Glades.
The Jaguars hung around for much of the afternoon against one of the best teams in the county, but Silvero turned the game on one swing in the fifth inning when he blasted a home run to right center, breaking a 1-1 tie. Douglas went on to win the game 3-1.
“I knew he was throwing the ball outside, so I tried to get up on the plate, and sit back and hit the ball the other way,” said Silvero, when describing his approach in the pivotal at-bat against Jaguars starter Derek Greider.
The Eagles struck first in the game when Courtland McEachrane walked, stole second, and scored in the first on a jaguars error.
Coral Glades answered back immediately in the second. After an Eagles error, Greg Farber scored on a foul sacrifice fly by Matt Grey, evening the score at one. The game stayed that way into the fifth, with both starting pitchers controlling the action.
Greider threw the ball well for the Jaguars, but was victimized by several errors. For the Eagles, Matt Davis went five strong innings, picking up the win, after Silvero gave Douglas the lead for good with his home run.
Coral Glades has now played the top two teams in the district tough, but defensive mistakes have cost the Jaguars, and that is something that Head Coach Jorge Miranda knows cannot continue if his team is going to challenge for a district title.
“The defense made the difference,” said Miranda. “All three of their runs were unearned. A team like that, you can’t give them extra outs. You have to play a perfect game. We had a plan, and we executed our plan to perfection, but we didn’t play defense, and we gave them extra outs, and they capitalized. They’re not 7-0 for nothing.”
As for Douglas, they must put this win in the past quickly with district rival Coral Springs on the schedule Thursday. The Eagles lost twice to the Colts in last year’s playoffs, but Head Coach Dean Florio believes the game with Coral Springs is just another step in the process.
“it’s just another district game,” said Florio. “We’re going to play our game, our approach. Our goal is the number one seed, and we’re just trying to go one district game at a time. We’re not worried about who it is, we’re just worried about what we can do, how we play, and how we prepare to play.”
