Archbishop McCarthy Takes Regular Season District Crown With 7-3 Win
Archbishop McCarthy defeated Pembroke Pines Charter 7-3 Thursday night to capture the number one seed in the District 15-4A tournament.
The Mavericks got ahead early, scoring four runs in the first to take control of the game from the get go. Jose Brizuela and Nick Basto started the game with singles to begin the rally. Alex Fernandez followed with a RBI double to left-center. Nick Travieso grounded out to short for a RBI as Fernandez moved to third on the play.
Fernandez would score on a balk to make it a 3-0 game. Ivan Santos reached on an error with two outs and later scored on a RBI double from Garret Kennedy.
Starting pitcher for Archbishop Ryan Castellanos held Pines Charter in check for the first three innings allowing only a couple of hits. Castellanos received a little help from his defense with a triple play in the third. With runners at first and second, Kevin Daly lined out to the third baseman Brizuela for the first out. Brizuela then threw to Fernandez at second for out number two, and Fernandez threw over to first for the third out.
Archbishop got back on the board with one more in the fourth on an error from the pitcher on an attempted pick off play with the bases loaded, making the score 4-0.
Pines Charter would add one of their own in the fourth on a solo home run from catcher Aramis Garcia.
Fernandez singled in the fifth, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Thompson to get that run back.
The Jaguars of Pines Charter were able to knock Castellanos out of the game in the fifth after back to back hits by Alejandro Miret and Ricardo Ramon. Archbishop would bring in Travieso from first. He would allow both runners to score and Pines Charter had fought their way back into the game to make it 6-3 but that would be all they would be able to come up with.
Fernandez added some insurance in the top of the seventh with a solo home run, his third hit of the game. He also scored three runs and stole a base.
Castellanos earned the victory and Travieso would notch the save for Archbishop while Connor Lowther received the loss.
