Calvary Christian Closes District Play With 11-0 Win Over Westminster

Calvary Christian’s Ryan Reilly hits a grand slam, one of his three hits in an 11-0 Eagles win over Westminster Christian

The Calvary Christian Eagles extended their winning streak to seven games and closed out their District 14-2A regular season with an 11-0 victory over the Westminster Academy Lions yesterday afternoon.

Eagles starter Chris Walkerow was very much in control in his four inning stint. He allowed only one hit, a second inning opposite field single to left by Daniel Burns, who was then erased on the front end of a 4-6-3 double play. That was it for the Lions offense on the day as they were retired in order in the third and fourth innings by the overpowering Walkerow. Ryan Lowery came in and worked a 1-2-3 scoreless fifth inning to end the abbreviated contest.

The afternoon fireworks were on full display as both Ryan Reilly and Stephen Barnett went 3-for-3 at the plate. Not to diminish Barnett’s accomplishments (three singles and an RBI), Reilly put up the big numbers with an RBI single in the first, a double in the third and a base-clearing grand slam homer in the fourth, while adding three runs scored.

“Barnett’s getting better. He’s improving and that’s what we want.” said Eagles Head Coach Greg Mucerino, when asked to comment on the unexpected fire power from the bottom half of his batting order. In the fourth, Reilly’s grand slam came after an intentional walk issued to Tyler Middlebrooks. “I was excited and happy to see him step up and bang one out.”

Asked to account for his recent turn-around at the plate, Barnett replied, “I’m keeping my hands high and getting the ‘load’ back. I’m just seeing the ball real well now.”

CCA’s clean-up hitter, Dalton Dinatale also had a productive day, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs while scoring twice. The smooth and reliable shortstop handled four grounders flawlessly in extending his errorless streak to a season-long twenty two games.

The win was the Eagles seventh in a row giving them a 15-6-1 overall record and a perfect 6-0 District record. They have a pair of non-district games left before beginning their quest for a District 14-2A championship.

Asked to assess his teams post season chances, Dinatale didn’t hesitate, responding, “We’re looking good and getting hot at the right time.”
