DJ Fenstermaker Strikes Out Twelve To Lead Pompano Over Deerfield
In a game that saw a combined seven hits, Pompano came away with a 3-2 victory on Deerfield’s home field. A costly error led to two runs for Pompano, giving them a lead they would not relinquish.
Deerfield got on the board in the first without getting a hit. Lead-off batter Andrew Danner walked and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch put him at third and another wild pitch allowed him to score the games first run.
Pompano came right back in the second and took advantage of an error to score two. Alan Benzenhafer reached on an error and was pinch ran for by Garret Gardner. Matt Fengler followed with a single and stole second to put two runners in scoring position with 1 out.
Nick Delgado would suicide squeeze home Gardner for the first run. Charlie Pal would follow with a two-out RBI single to take the 2-1 lead.
Pompano scored once more run in the third and that would be all Fenstermaker would need. Jared Sundook reached base after swinging at the third strike and the ball getting by the catcher. He would steal second and score on a RBI single from Benzenhafer.
Fenstermaker was able to keep the Deerfield lineup in check except for Danner who went 2-for-2 with a walk. Danner also scored both Deerfield runs. Fenstermaker went the distance striking out twelve and allowing the lone walk to Danner.
“He’s a Deerfield guy and those are a lot of his friends over there,” said Pompano Head Coach George Petik of his starting pitcher, “He was lights out, I don’t know how many pitches he threw but he wasn’t on a pitch count and he was stronger later in the game than what he started.”
For Deerfield, Nick Baker started on the mound and went three innings suffering the loss. Nick Miller pitched the final four innings without allowing a hit.
This was the final regular season game for both teams as district playoffs begin next week. Stay tuned for an exciting week of high school baseball for Broward County as teams chase state titles in their respective class.
“We’ve got Pine Crest Monday, we’ll throw our number one Richman and we’ll probably see their number one” said Petik about district playoffs next week, “We split the regular season, so we’ll see what happens.”
