Jaguars Pound Out Twenty-Two Hits, Four Homers, In 20-10 Win Over Piper
With district play set to begin next week, every team wants to carry a hot bat into the postseason.
Pembroke Pines Charter has that covered.
The Jaguars pounded out twenty-two total hits and four home runs to ruin Piper’s Senior Night, downing the host Bengals 20-10, at Piper High in Tamarac on Wednesday evening.
“We really needed this to get back on track,” said shortstop Kevin Daly, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four total RBI on the night. “The way we’re hitting we can compete with anyone.”
Daly had a two-run homer as part of a seven-run sixth inning, and then led off the top of the seventh with a solo shot to left-center field.
“I don’t hit many home runs. I was just trying to put a line-drive swing on the ball,” said Daly.
Catcher Aramis Garcia was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a triple, three runs and an RBI, while designated hitter Brett Kelley Jr. was 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
The Jaguars (9-9) had nine total extra-base hits as every starter in the lineup reached base multiple times.
“Our assistant coach Willie Hernandez has worked one-on-one with each hitter the last few weeks, and we are really focusing on our hitting and defense. It was nice to see that work paying off,” said Pines Charter coach Carlos Iglesias. “On Monday everyone is 0-0 again. What matters is who is getting hot at the right time of the season.”
Piper did show the ability to answer back with its bats. The Bengals (9-9) had eleven hits themselves, and scored runs in every inning except for the sixth.
Senior first baseman Alen Arslanyan had a memorable Senior Night, going 4-for-4 and also walking to reach base in all five at-bats. He had a pair of doubles and a two-run home run that tied the game at two in the bottom of the first inning.
Freshman catcher Chris Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI and senior Kyle Sinclair was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Jaguars broke the game open with four runs in the second, as third baseman Jorge Marrero had a two-RBI double, and then came around to score himself on a home run by Kevin Fenster.
Marrero was 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs.
The Jaguars Raul Girardi took over in relief in the second inning and struck out two over three innings of work to improve to 3-3, while Piper’s Julio Queones took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the year.
The game lasted three hours and ten minutes and saw seven different pitchers throw a total of 280 pitches.
“It felt like we were in a Yankees-Red Sox marathon,” joked Iglesias.
