McArthur Takes District 11-6A Title By Defeating South Plantation 10-0
McArthur defeated South Plantation on Thursday night 10-0 in five innings to win 6A District 11. The win also gives the Mustangs another home game for their regional quarterfinal. South Plantation will now have to go on the road for their regional game.
“Four years in the making, we’ve got six seniors and it was our goal from day one,” said McArthur Head Coach Daniel Baugh about being district champs. “We knew we had something special and it was a matter of finding the right pieces and this year we did.”
It was all McArthur from the first inning. South Plantation was only able to put five runners on base and could never string enough hits together to get across a run.
Credit Jose Ortiz for shutting down the South Plantation offense. He threw a complete game three hitter to earn the trophy for his team. Ortiz struck out six batters in a row in the 2nd and 3rd inning and had eight for the game.
Offensively for McArthur, they got on the board with one-out solo home run in the second from Michael Ferretti. They scored one more in the inning on back to back hits from Mark Hines and Dylan Segula.
Jake Welch doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the third to make it 3-0.
In the fourth, McArthur was able to knock South Plantation’s starting pitcher Brian Buzzella out of the game. They scored five runs on four hits and a costly South Plantation error.
Hines hit a one-out home run to dead center, his second hit of the game as he finished 2-2 with three runs scored on the night.
Segula singled and Jesus Patricio both singled following the solo shot and Kevin Rosario walked to load the bases. Welch laid down a squeeze bunt to the pitcher and he threw the ball away in an attempt to get the force at home, allowing two runners to score on the play. Javier Aguilar followed with a two-run single.
It was 8-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th and McArthur wouldn’t let South Plantation get another shot. Rosario hit a walk off single, driving in Ferretti and Hines on the play to end the game.
“Take my hat off to South Plantation, their a great team,” said Baugh, “Our guys wanted it and it really showed.’
