North Broward Prep Advances Behind Lazaro’s 15 Strikeouts
Josean Lazaro struck out fifteen Pompano Beach batters to lead North Broward Prep into the Championship game against American Heritage – who won in the first semi-final game of the day. The Eagles scored six runs on nine hits and Lazaro shutout Pompano for a 6-0 win.
“It was kind of quiet but good enough to get it done,” said North Broward Prep Head Coach Brian Campbell about his team’s win, “Our two out hitting was huge tonight.”
Pompano loaded the bases in the first with one out on a pair of hits and a walk for their best scoring opportunity of the game. Lazaro was able to escape with a strikeout and a ground out to first to retire the side.
The Eagles got an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first as that would prove to be all they would need. Lazaro helped himself with a one out single, then he came around to score on a fielders choice from Mike Vigliarolo.
Designated hitter A.J. Fidalic doubled for North Broward and scored on a Nick Marsit single in the second to make it 2-0.
North Broward opened the game in the fourth with three runs on three hits. Fidalic led the inning off with his second hit of the game and scored his second run. Kevin Fagan had a RBI single and also scored in the inning.
They scored their last run in the fifth on an RBI double from Marsit. The last three batters in the Eagle lineup accounted for four of their six runs.
Lazaro struck out at least two batters from the second inning on for the complete game shutout and win.
“I’ve been relying a lot on my curveball early in the game lately until I feel lose and have a feel for my fastball,” said Lazaro about his performance, “That was when I was able to settle in.”
“I didn’t expect anything less from him then to come out and get it done,” said Campbell about Lazaro, “He’s got a good idea of what he wants to do out there, he loves to compete and wants to be on this stage.”
Dj Fenstermaker worked four innings for Pompano receiving the loss and Nick Delgado went 2-2 with a hit by pitch.
“Our mentality, our focus was one game at a time,” said Lazaro about his teams win or go home game against Pompano.
