Piper Scored 4 Runs In The Sixth To Advance Over Hollywood Hills
Piper survives to advance past the 6th seeded Spartans with a 7-5 victory. They trailed by two heading into the bottom of the sixth as they rallied for four runs to take the lead.
Hollywood Hills got on the board first with a couple of hits and an error in the top half of the second. Pena singled with one out and eventually scored on a dropped fly ball in the infield.
The Bengals would take the lead with three runs in the third on three hits and a two-run error with two outs. Abraham Alejandro, Bryan Rath, and Alen Arslanyan all singled and scored in the inning.
The Spartans would come right back in the fourth to cut the lead in half, manufacturing their second run to make it 3-2. Powell reached on an error and was sacrificed to second. The next batter, Welk, would drive him in.
Again in the fifth, they would manufacture a run after a leadoff single from Hernandez and a sacrifice bunt from Grant. The starting pitcher for the Spartans, Chen, would help himself out and tie the game at three.
It was more of the same in the top half of the sixth for Hollywood Hills as they added two more runs. Pierce had a RBI single and DiAngeli scored on a first and third double steal to give them a 5-3 lead.
Piper would not go down quietly as they rallied for four runs on five hits to take the 7-5 lead in the sixth. The first four batters of the inning all singled, the biggest hit a two-run single from Alejandro with the bases loaded to tie the game. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout, Arslanyan came up with runners at second and third and delivered the game winning hit for Piper.
“I was just trying to get the team hyped up right there,” said Arslanyan as the team huddled before they hit in the sixth, “We came out flat tonight, but sixth inning came around and the team came though with situational hitting.”
“Arslanyan has been big all year for us but what impressed me tonight was my two freshmen,” said Piper Head Coach Chris Costanzo. “Kharlin Sued and Chris Rodriguez came through with two base hits in the last inning to get us started, just a total team effort and Arslanyan has just been on fire.”
For Piper on the mound Mikey Morejon went five and a third for the no decision and Colby Costanzo picked up the win in relief pitching the final inning and two thirds.
“A lot of credit to Hollywood Hills, they came out and swung the bats well tonight, they’re a good hitting team and we fought back,” said Costanzo.
