Broward Players Hold Their Own On District 15-3A Team
District 15-3A is one of two districts in Broward County where Broward teams are mixed with programs from other counties. With six teams in the district, three come from Broward, while the other three reside in Miami-Dade. The mix creates for some exciting inter-county high school baseball.
In the standings, it was the Miami-Dade teams that came out on top this season in District 15-4A. On the All-District team, however, Broward held their own, with some strong season’s from players on Somerset, University, and Chaminade Madonna.
The Player of the Year did not come from Broward. Alex Perez is considered one of the top high school prospects in Florida, and he showed why this season both on the mound and with his bat. Perez was one of the most feared pitchers in the Sunshine State, compiling 100 strikeouts and having an ERA just over one. Perez added a .457 batting average, with thirty-five RBIs and an equal amount of runs for LaSalle.
One of the pitchers that had to battle Perez on the mound was Chaminade ace Chris Flores. Lions junior threw all of Chaminade’s big games, and finished the season with an ERA in the low three’s. Flores also added three complete games and forty-one strikeouts to his 2011 resume.
Many of the top players in District 15-3A did multiple things for their teams. Manny Silveira and Michael White of University, and Jean Acevedo from Doral, helped their teams on the mound and offensively. White and Silveira both hit over .400 for the Suns, and each was an integral part to the Suns going 18-8 on the year. Acevedo hit .446, with eight home runs at the plate for the Firebirds, while striking out fifty-seven on the hill.
In the outfield, Angel Navarro was one of two Monsignor Pace players on the All-District team. Navarro hit .434, had eleven extra base hits, and twenty-seven runs scored. Navarro was joined in the outfield by Robert Fajardo from LaSalle. One of the top defensive players in the district, Fajardo also did it with his bat, using his speed to amass forty-six runs and nineteen stolen bases.
The District 15-3A infield had a strong Broward flavor. Kevin Abraham of Somerset Academy had six home runs and a .519 on-base percentage, good enough to win him top honors at a competitive position. Sebastian Diaz of University and Luis Guillorme, provide an all-sophomore, Broward middle infield at second base and shortstop, respectively. David Palenzuela from Pace, and Elier Rodriguez from LaSalle, man the corners on the All-District team, with Palenzuela at first, and Rodriguez at third.
