Life Is Not The Pitts For District 14-2A Player Of The Year
Kyle Pitts was thrown into the fire as a freshman at Coral Springs Christian. At a time when the school was building a reputation as one of the top programs in Broward County, Crusaders coaches saw that Pitts would be the future. Just two weeks into his freshman season, Pitts took over as the number three hitter in the CS Christian lineup.
The Crusaders shortstop has capped off his career with a great senior season that has led him to being named as Broward High School Baseball’s District 14-2A Player of the Year. In a district dominated by CS Christian and Calvary Christian, Pitts stood out among a strong group of seniors and juniors on the inaugural BHSB 14-2A All-District team.
In four years, Pitts did not hit less than .440 in any given season. He was the MVP of spring break tournaments in 2010 and 2011. The Crusaders won their spring break tournament this season in Orlando, with Pitts going 9-13, with four doubles, six RBIs, and three walks. Overall, Pitts finished this season hitting .473. He had a .583 on-base-percentage, hit six home runs, had eight doubles, and drove in thirty-eight runs.
“Kyle has led by example,” said Crusaders Head Coach Matt Cleveland. “He has always wanted to improve, and worked hard to do so. He had a great year, not only by coming up with big hits, but he also held it down in the field. He was consistent in everything he did.”
The rest of the 14-2A All-District team was also loaded with talent. Five of the eleven players finished with batting averages above .400. Pitts was joined on the All-District squad by teammates Jessie Feyers (.462) and Derek Barra (.375), at second base and in the outfield, respectively.
On the mound, Coral Springs Christian is represented on the team by starter Billy Atkins and closer Kevin Knapp.
Calvary Christian, who finished the season at 18-8-1, was well represented as well. Calvary grabbed six of the eleven offensive spots on the team. First baseman Emilio DeSilva led the way with a .455 batting average, nine stolen bases, and thirty-five runs.
Ensuring that they were not left out of the mix, Westminster Academy had two All-County players in James Cote and Will Buschman. Cote led the district in hitting at .529, while Buschman finished tied with DeSilva for second in the district in runs scored, behind only Cote.
Calvary Head Coach Greg Mucerino took Coach of the Year honors in the district. Mucerino created one of the toughest schedules in the county, and still led the Eagles to an impressive 18-8-1 record.
