Daniel Baugh Resigns As Head Coach At McArthur
Juggling family life and coaching responsibilities is a tough task for baseball coaches in Broward County. For Daniel Baugh, the idea of putting family first has led to a decision that will shake up the McArthur baseball program.
Baugh led the Mustangs to the District 11-6A title this past season, and the team has been on the rise in recent years, which is why it came as a shock to some Tuesday when Baugh resigned as head coach at McArthur. Baugh will be moving to Hillsborough County, where he took a job teaching at Chamberlain High School.
“Coaching has endless rewards, but when you go home and have no one to share those stories and accomplishments with, you really start to look at life a little differently,” said Baugh, the 2011 BHSB District 11-6A Coach of the Year. “That is why I have decided to resign from McArthur and move to Tampa. I want to start my family, and share new experiences and accomplishments with them.”
This past season was somewhat of a roller-coaster ride for McArthur. The team lost their first two games of the year to Cooper City and Western, before rolling off ten wins in their next twelve games. The highlight of the streak was a 3-1 record in their spring break tournament. By season’s end, Baugh had the Mustangs playing their best ball, as evidenced by a 2-1 win over Plantation in the district semi-finals, and a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over South Plantation to earn the district title.
As for leaving McArthur, Baugh acknowledged it was not an easy choice to leave.
“This was the toughest decision I have ever had to make. I love McArthur, love the program, players, coaches, and administration….whoever takes over is stepping into a great job, with plenty of support. I wish the program continued success, which I expect they will have.”
In five seasons with McArthur, Baugh compiled a 54-47 record. In addition to the district championship last year, the Mustangs also went to regionals as a district runner-up in 2010.
McArthur will immediately start looking for replacements for Baugh, with the expectation of making a hire in a timely manner. Any interested coaches can contact athletic director Stacy Bennett at 754-323-1200, or e-mail Stacy at stacy.bennett@browardschools.com.
