Cardinal Gibbons Scores Early, Shuts Out Plantation
Cardinal Gibbons scored a pair of runs in the first inning and was able to shut down the Plantation offense with stellar pitching backed by solid defense in a 4-0 win Tuesday.
Micheal Anderson started and went five innings for Gibbons. He allowed just three hits while striking out six and not issuing a walk. John Leachman relieved Anderson, struck out a pair and allowed a couple of hits.
Cardinal Gibbons pitchers combined to strike out eight batters and did not allow any walks.
Offensively, leadoff hitter Tyler Norris jumped on the first pitch he saw to get Gibbons going in the bottom of the first. He stole second and advanced to third on a 6-3 putout.
Shane Sibley doubled in Norris and eventually scored on a throwing error by the Plantation first baseman.
“We were able to jump on them early, shutting them down 1-2-3 in the top half of the first then score two runs quickly,” Cardinal Gibbons coach Frank Pisani said. “We had unbelievable pitching, not walking a batter and not making any errors.”
Gibbons added another run in the third with a two-out bases-loaded walk to Anderson. Ryan Bowman drew a one-out walk and scored to give Anderson the RBI.
The Chiefs completed the scoring in the fourth as David Pedraza reached on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sibley.
Adam Shorr went 2-for-3 with two singles for Plantation, and Gus Cinquino started and worked three innings, giving up three runs, two of which were earned. Peter Almeida pitched the final three innings, allowing one unearned run.
