Coral Springs Gains Key Tournament Win With Five-Run Sixth
Coral Springs defeated Pembroke Pines 11-6 last night at Colts Stadium in a game that came down to a couple of big innings for each team.
The Colts had a three-run first inning, thanks to good hustle on the bases by Dylan Ebel and Tre Dingus. Ebel and Dingus had infield hits before Dalton Wolchik drove in two with a double down the right-field line.
After the Colts tacked on a run in the top of the third, Pembroke Pines Charter answered back in its half of the inning. The Jaguars scored six runs on four hits in the frame. Carlos Lopez Jr. hit a double that drove in two of the runs, while Jorge Marrero and Kevin Ellenbogan had singles that produced a run each.
Trailing 6-4, Coral Springs tied the game in the fourth with help from Ian Delamadrid, who crushed a double to the fence in left and was then driven in by starting pitcher Aaron Maller with a double of his own to right.
The game stayed tied until the sixth when Coral Springs broke it open with five runs. Two walks, a couple of stolen bases and an RBI single by Austin Nelson keyed the five-run outburst.
The Jaguars used six pitchers in the game, starting with Alejandro Kan, and used three pitchers in the sixth to try to slow the Colts offense, but it wasn’t enough.
Despite the loss, Jaguars coach Carlos Iglesias saw some positives from his team.
“Our kids showed a lot of heart,” Iglesias said. “We were down 4-0 and came back to take the lead 6-4, and we had a chance to win. Our kids fought all the way until the last pitch, and that’s all you can ask.”
After Maller had an uncharacteristically rough night, reliever Joe Silvani held the Jaguars down in the middle innings before closer Dalton Wolchik shut the door in the sixth.
Even with the win, Colts coach Frank Bumbales understands that his team will have to play better if it intends to advance out of the group stage.
“They have to realize that if they want to move on in the tournament, they’ve got to win the last game and shut the team down,” Bumbales said. “Hopefully we’ll play better than we have.”
The Colts and Jaguars are 1-1 in group play. University School leads the group with a 2-0 record. The Jaguars will face the Suns on Saturday afternoon, with the Colts closing out their group play against Somerset.
