Nova Trio Massaro, Monoghan, Corey Sign
Three Nova players signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. Troy Massaro (pitcher/first baseman) is going to the University of Central Florida, Trent Monoghan (pitcher/right fielder) is headed to the Air Force and Tommy Corey (catcher/third baseman) will play for Cortland State.
Massaro, who went 4-0 with a 0.78 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched last year, also was considering the University of South Florida, Florida State and Georgia Southern.
Massaro said Central Florida is “a school I would want to go to if I’m not playing baseball, so baseball just adds to it.”
Nova coach Pat McQuaid said Massaro’s “biggest asset is he’s a competitor. He doesn’t want to lose. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.”
McQuaid said he’s looking for Massaro to “continue the tradition of good pitchers we’ve had here at Nova.”
Monoghan said it was a no-brainer for him to select Air Force as going there fulfills a life-long dream.
“I’ve wanted to be a pilot since I was a kid,” he said.
McQuaid said “when a kid gets to have an opportunity to play out his dream, it’s special.”
Corey said he chose Cortland State because he likes the direction he’s going to get there.
“The coaching is phenomenal,” said Corey, who also was considering Hofstra. “The biggest thing was the coaching. They talk about playing the game right and hustling. There, it’s team first. I really like that.”
McQuaid commends Corey’s work ethic and considers him the hardest worker on the team. His good defensive skills rank him among the long line of very good catchers the school has produced.
