No-Hitter Against Cardinal Gibbons by Brandon Burgess
Brandon Burgess of Chaminade-Madonna no-hit Cardinal Gibbons Tuesday night and faced the minimum over seven innings of work. A pair of walks were both erased on double-plays, while Burgess struck out 10 batters, all swinging.
“His pitch count was getting up there but he wanted to go back out in the 7th, he’s a big, strong kid so I let him roll with it tonight,” said Chaminade Head Coach Mike Moss.
After a slow fall, the bats finally woke up for Chaminade behind Burgess as they scored eight runs, taking advantage of seven Gibbons errors. The Lions scored three in the first, proving to be all they would need behind the no-hitter.
“Huge plus,” said coach Moss on being able to score in the first, “It helped everyone settle down and Brandon pitched a heck of a game.”
Luis Guillorme started his own big night at the plate with a two-RBI triple driving in Dan Vitello and Mitch Moormann who both reached on errors. Guillorme would score on a sacrifice fly from Ed Guardarrama.
“Luis had a great game, four hits and five RBIs, and our guy throws a no-hitter,” said coach Moss, “What more can you ask for?”
Chaminade scored two more in the fourth on another Gibbons error. Chris Flores had a one-out single and scored on a sacrifice fly from Vitello. Austin Westerman reached on an error and came around to score on a single from Guillorme, his third hit of the game.
Guillorme added another single in the 6th with the bases loaded, plating Flores and Vitello to make it 7-0. Chaminade added one more in the 7th for the final score of the game.
On the mound for Gibbons, Michael Hanke started and went 3 innings giving up three unearned runs and striking out four. Jeff McNabb relieved Hanke and worked 2 1/3 innings giving up four runs, one earned. Townsend Crittenberger threw the final 1 2/3, giving up one unearned run.
“Complete reverse from game one,” said Gibbons Head Coach Frank Pisani, “We gave them three in the first and their kid (Burgess) stuck it to us.”
Way to go Brandon! Your Uncle Mike is real proud of you.
