Travieso, Martinez Headline Group of Six McCarthy Players Signing
Nick Travieso signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Miami and Andre Martinez with Florida State University on Wednesday, leading a group of six baseball players from the school to sign.
Martinez led the staff with a 12-2 record along with 1.50 ERA and 96 strikeouts in 56 innings.
“We’re excited,” Director of Baseball Operations Alex Fernandez said. “They have a lot of talent and those two guys can take pitching here to the next level.”
The others players who signed are Ryan Castellanos (University of Illinois), Nick Basto (Florida International), Adam Duarte (St. Thomas University) and Jason Morozowski (University of South Carolina Upstate).
“A lot of great talent has come through here the past few years,” Fernandez said. “It’s a goal of ours to get kids to the next level and get them into pretty good colleges.”
Travieso said “Alex Fernandez does an amazing job of getting players ready to go to college. He puts us out there.”
Travieso, who batted .310 last year with six home runs, said going to play for Miami is “something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid. It’s one of the best programs in the country. They have a great coaching staff, and I’ve always admired them.”
Playing close to home was a big plus for Travieso. “I grew up here and love the people,” he said.
Staying nearby was also a big thing for Duarte, who also considered Elon and West Alabama.
Basto was considering Virginia Tech but said FIU is a “great school. I love the program. They’re going to give me a good opportunity to play.”
Castellanos said he “fell in love” while visiting the University of Illinois. “It had a good college feel. I really like the area. It just feels like family.”
