Daily Recap for Broward Games on Tuesday, February 12th
It was another exciting day across Broward County as the 2013 baseball season gets underway. Here’s a look at today’s highlights.
St. Thomas Aquinas 6, Calvary Christian 5 – Alec Spano had a sacrifice flyout in the bottom of the seventh to help the Raiders (1-0) overcome a late Eagles comeback. Spano was 2-for-3, and Christian Demby was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. Calvary falls to 1-1 after back-to-back games to start the year.
Western 13, Piper 0 – Western (1-0) got its first shutout since Feb. 23, 2012. Armondo Hernandez scored four runs while going 2-for-3 with a double to lead Western. Senior Sean Horner picked up the victory, holding the Bengals (0-1) to just two hits.
Fort Lauderdale 5, McArthur 3 – Fourth-year starter Brad Smith opened his senior season by leading the Flying L’s (1-0) to victory. Alec Bryant had a two-run double in the first inning and Hunter Kay was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kevin Rosario was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, and Javier Aguilar was also 2-for-3 for McArthur (0-1).
South Plantation 18, Miramar 1 – Junior Ryan Terill wrecked havoc from both sides, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out eight, while also batting 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. Moses Matos was 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and four runs, and Dustin Birchall was also 3-for-3 for the Paladins (1-0). The Patriots (0-1) remain on the road to next play at Ely on Friday night.
Somerset 5, Pembroke Pines Charter 2 – Senior Etienne Latour allowed two runs over six innings to earn the victory for the Panthers (1-0), while fellow ace Brandon Acevedo struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save. Senior first baseman Chris Medina had a double and two RBIs to pace the offense. The Jaguars (0-1) had won its last two season openers.
Everglades 10, Cooper City 0 – The Gators (1-0) recorded their first shutout victory since Feb. 24, 2012 as senior left-hander Adam Murray tossed a one-hitter, issuing four walks and notching seven strikeouts. Senior Kris Taveras batted 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs, and junior Brandon Escalante drove in three while going 2-for-2 with a double.
Southridge 6, Chaminade-Madonna 5 – The Lions (0-1) had a late rally with three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but fell just short in Miami. Juan Martinez was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and Mike Ramunno had a two-run triple. Julian Pino was 2-for-4, while Mike Nader took the loss on the mound.
Westwood Christian 5, Zion Lutheran 4 – The Lions (0-1) gave the Class 2A state runner ups a good scare by taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning. But the Warriors rode the strength of a pair of home runs to prevail. J.R. Meneses was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Bobby Barradas was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Zion.
Monarch 10, Boyd Anderson 0 – The Knights improved to 2-0 to start the season as Gino Poliandro had a single, a walk and a stolen base.
Coral Springs Charter 10, Dr. Krop 2 – The Panthers improved to 2-0 while outscoring their opposition 20-2. Jorge Solano had three hits and two RBIs and Newil Guzman also recorded three hits and an RBI.
Pine Crest 14, Pope John Paul II 1 – Zack Kone had a monster day with a pair of doubles and seven RBIs to move the Panthers to 2-0 on the year. Adam Sax was 2-for-2 with a double and three runs.
