HSBN Broward Game of the Week Schedule Announced
Last season, the High School Baseball Network Broward Game of the Week produced some of the most exciting games of the entire season. In 2014, HSBN has honed in on some of the most bitter rivalries, district foes, and three former state champions all looking to get back to Fort Myers.
Archbishop McCarthy, the unprecedented four-time state champions, take their show to Class 5A this season, where they will join crosstown rival American Heritage. The Mavericks will be book-ending this season’s Game of the Week’s, kicking the season off against Somerset Academy at home on Friday, February 14th, and ending the year on the road at Flanagan on Saturday, April 12th.
Somerset will be looking to make a statement similar to the one they made near the end of last season when they defeated the Mavericks. The Panthers have reloaded, and are looking to make the leap into the elite group of teams in 2014.
Flanagan has spent the past few years away from the state final four, but while they have fallen short of their ultimate goal, the Falcons have remained among the top five programs in the county. Flanagan will be looking to showcase their talent with the late season match-up with the Mavericks.
On Saturday, February 22nd, two former district rivals will reignite their rivalry. Fort Lauderdale and Pembroke Pines Charter have provided some of the most memorable games in the past few years. This season, Fort Lauderdale moves up from 6A to 7A, and will compete in an all-public school district for the first time. Pines Charter remains in 6A, but moves districts and will be considered among the favorites to win the 6A-14 title.
University School will be hosting their first-ever Game of the Week on Friday, February 28th, when North Broward Prep travels to face the Suns. University will be starting a new chapter in the program’s history, with Manager Dan Rovetto taking over, after coaching Coral Springs Charter last season. Ironically, Rovetto is no stranger to the Game of the Week, as he played at North Broward Prep last season with the Panthers.
On Saturday, March 8th, one of the biggest rivalries in the county will be on display. Coral Glades has been knocking on the door for several years, and this is the season the Jaguars are looking to finally break through. In order to do that, they will have to handle their business in the Game of the week against Douglas. The Eagles returned to the top of 8A-11 last season, and this year they are loaded for a state title run.
Coral Springs Christian is another team with state aspirations. The Crusaders looked to be on their way to the state final four last year, before a rally by Florida Christian ended their season in the regional finals. On Saturday, March 15th, CS Christian will host Pompano. It will be the second time the Crusaders have hosted a Game of the Week.
Highlands Christian and Westminster Academy provide yet another district rivalry match-up on Friday, March 21st. The Knights are coming off a season in which they advanced to regional play. The Lions and Manager Nick James are hoping this is the season they are able to work their way to the top of 3A-14.
On Saturday, April 5th, HSBN will be bringing a special treat to South Florida baseball fans with a sense of history. South Plantation travels to take on Cypress Bay. The game will be a special one for Cypress Bay Manager Mike White and assistant coach Paul Liotti. The two Lightning coaches are former Paladins managers. Current South Plantation Manager Ken Gomez remains close with both Lightning coaches, making for an intriguing late-season match-up.
