Highlights, Scores and Recaps for Saturday, February 14th, 2015

The first week of the season just wrapped up Saturday, but already the Pine Crest Panthers have two wins in the very competitive 4A-14. The Panthers beat Somerset 6-3 by capitalizing on a five-run second inning. Zach Kone had two hits and two runs as Pine Crest improved to 2-1 overall. The Panthers weren’t the only team celebrating a big win Saturday. On the other side of the state, Piper edged Naples St. John Neumann 2-1 behind a 12-strikeout, complete-game performance by Joe Sallustio, giving the Bengals a 3-0 start under the direction of new Manager Pat Pisani. It’s one of the best starts in years for Piper. University School wrapped up a trip to the Keys by notching their third consecutive win as Evan McKendry struck out nine in six innings. In tournament action, St. Thomas Aquinas fell short against Columbus, losing 7-4 in the Falcons Challenge championship. It sill was a solid week for the Raiders, who are 2-1 against some tough competition. Taravella’s seventh-inning rally wasn’t enough in a 2-1 loss to Wellington in the Coral Springs Classic final…
