Archbishop McCarthy Powers Past Palm Bay
Archbishop McCarthy used a balanced offensive attack Thursday to crush Palm Bay 9-0 and move on to a rematch with its nemesis American Heritage in a regional semifinal Tuesday.
The Mavericks got things going in the top of the second when Fred Matos, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, singled to left to score JT Thompson, and Kobe Lopez, who went 2-for-5, scored on a passed ball.
McCarthy added a run in the third as Alex Toral singled in Alex Carballo, who doubled in Lopez in the fourth as the Mavericks built a 4-0 lead.
McCarthy kept the pressure on in the fourth inning as Lopez doubled to score Thompson and then came home on a double by Matos.
The score stayed 6-0 until the top of the seventh when the Mavericks scored three more. Adan Fernandez doubled in Ubaldo Lopez to make it 7-0 before Kobe Lopez had a base hit to bring in Fernandez. Jake Anchia walked with the bases load to bring in the final run represented by Fernandez.
Brian Van Belle earned the win for the Mavericks, throwing four scoreless innings and striking out two.
