Cooper City Holds Off Coral Springs 6-5
It was an exciting night at Coral Springs High as the Colts hosted the Cooper City Cowboys in a hard-fought game that ended with a 6-5 Cooper City victory.
Starting on the mound for the Cowboys was winning pitcher, junior Jeremy Brower. The right-hander pitched a solid five innings that included five strikeouts, and he only allowed three hits. Senior Angel Almonte came into relief the final two innings and held the Colts, striking out three.
The bats were hot from the start for the Cowboys (2-0) and that momentum led them to victory. Senior Robert Shanley led the team in RBIs with three and senior Cole Kantor finished the night going 3-for-4 with three singles. Junior Devin Pole came in clutch in the fourth inning with a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners over into scoring position for the top of the lineup to bring home another run.
“We knew it was going to be a close game, definitely a good game and we had big hits today,” Cooper City manager Chris Delgado said. “The bats were definitely on today, so we’re just going to build from that.”
Senior Phil Quinn took the mound to start for the Colts (3-1) and he threw a strong four innings with three strikeouts. Junior Matt LeConte closed it out for the last three innings, striking out two.
Although the bats might have started late for the Colts, they never gave up, which is what led to an exciting last three innings where they scored all the five runs they put up on the board. Junior Sean Baran started the rally with back-to-back singles in the fifth and sixth inning to left-center and right-center. Junior Alexsi Pogrebnov got everyone excited with a triple to the left-center field gap that scored two runs in the fifth inning.
Senior Tyler Hall kicked off the sixth inning with a single up the middle. Baran and juniors John Lombardi and Matt LeConte all followed through with singles that scored two more runs and really got the fans excited.
