Coral Springs Christian Earns First Victory Of The Season
In a game that was filled with excitement and both teams blowing multiple leads, the Coral Springs Christian Crusaders gave their fans some hope for the 2016 season with a hard-fought win 6-4 over Coral Glades in a Colts First Pitch Classic match-up.
The Crusaders came to bat down two runs in the seventh, but Timmy Manning had other ideas then going quietly into the night. Manning started the four-run winning rally with a lead-off single from the ninth position in the batting order. Kyle Cattrysse followed with a double, and suddenly the Crusaders were in business.
After a strikeout, Jordan Small doubled, tying the game at four. After an Austin Marks base hit moved Small to third, a wild pitch brought Small across with what would serve as the winning run.
“Great team comeback win,” said Crusaders Manager Steve Carp. “Aggressive baserunning there in the seventh by Small and Marks helped that rally out.”
Small was not only one of the hitting heroes for CS Christian, but also picked up the win in relief, throwing two shutout innings. That came after starter Coby Mayo, who was pressed into the starting pitching role on this day, threw three strong innings.
“Coby threw three great innings,” said Carp. “It is just a great team win, and something we can build on early in the year.”
Coral Glades battled back the entire afternoon. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Jaguars tied the score in their half of the inning when Alex Lara led off with a single. An error put runners on first and second for Jon Hook, who evened the score at two with a double.
Coral Glades took the lead with a run in each of the third and fifth innings, but were unable to hold the lead in the final frame.
The Crusaders moved to 1-1 with the win, while the Jaguars fell to 0-2.
