Cypress Bay Wins Big Over Coral Glades At Marlins Park
With the announcer’s address booming through the spacious stadium at Marlins Park, the Cypress Bay Lightning were of and running from the first pitch. The Lightning opened a big lead and never looked back to win 15-1 over Coral Glades in a special meeting Tuesday morning in Miami.
Cypress Bay took a five-run lead after one and then erupted for nine runs in the second to jump way out in front. Ben Rushing was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Anthony Figueroa went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs to lead the Lightning.
Jose Natera chipped in with a 2-for-3 day that included a double and two runs, and Miguel Alba was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
It is the second year in a row that the Lightning (3-4) have enjoyed the chance to play a game at the park. Last season they were on the other end of a lopsided contest, and although the win feels good the best part is simply giving the kids the chance to enjoy this moment.
“It is always an amazing experience for our players and coaches to be a part of playing in Marlins Park,” Cypress Bay manager Paul Liotti said. “Last year we were on the losing end but were able to play 26 players. This year we were fortunate enough to play well and put ourselves in position to again play 26 players. With all the emphasis on district games, it’s nice to get the chance to have a non-district game that will have a lasting impact on the boys. The Marlins are first class and we enjoy being here.”
Both managers understood the importance for the kids to play in this game. The Jaguars (1-4) got 24 different guys into the contest, including six different pitchers. Joe Juliano led the offense by scoring the only run, after he singled in the fourth and came in following singles from Jon Hook and John Troia.
The Lightning pitching staff controlled things most of the way. Greyson Fletcher set the tone with two scoreless innings in the start, as he struck out three. The club rolled out six different hurlers after that, with Devin Ramirez striking out both batters he faced to end it.
