Highlights, Scores and Recaps for Saturday, February 13th, 2016

Joseph Spano and his Piper teammates have had quite an opening week to the 2016 season. Spano struck out 12 and kept South Fort Myers scoreless in a 4-0 win Saturday. The victory moved the Bengals to 4-0 on the young season. Spano drove in the winning run in a 5-4 win over Miramar on Thursday and he hit a three-run shot in a 12-1 win over South Broward on Tuesday. Eric Rath also was key Saturday as he went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The day before, he struck out seven to earn the win in a 12-1 victory against Community School of Naples.

Coral Springs won its tournament, the Colts First Pitch Classic, on Saturday by holding off district-rival Taravella 5-4. The Colts scored all of their runs in the second and stopped a two-run Trojans rally in the top of the seventh. John Lombardi went 3-for-3 to pace the Colts (3-0) on offense. Darrin Brown tripled in two runs, and Max Lazar struck out seven and allowed one hit in five innings to get the win.

Chaminade-Madonna is off a 2-0 start, both of them district wins, as they beat Hialeah Educational 5-3 on Saturday. Michael Blanco earned the win.

The Pompano Beach Golden Tornadoes blew past Naples Lely 15-3 on Saturday as Austin Carney went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Trevor Kniskern went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, and Vinnie Costello homered and drove in four runs.

Buddy Hayward struck out six in five innings to help University School beat Coral Shores 7-2 to end the opening week 3-1.
