Schmidt’s No-No Leads University Past Hialeah Educational
University School’s Jack Schmidt tossed a no-hitter against the Hialeah Educational Academy Bulldogs to lead his Sharks to a 5-0 victory on Wednesday night. The win is the fifth straight for the 6-1, district-leading University squad, and the third straight 4A-17 tilt that has gone in their favor. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs fall to 2-5 with a 1-4 mark in district competition.
The Sharks did all their work at the plate in the first inning. They recorded two walks and four base hits to stake their starter to a comfortable lead, chief among them a two-run single by Michael Glantz.
From there, Schmidt took over, working all five innings in the rain-shortened game. He only allowed two base-runners, one via a walk and another due to an error. Otherwise, Schmidt baffled the Bulldog hitters, sending nine of them back to the bench on strikes. Those that did put the ball in play never managed to get it out of the infield.
With one out in the first and all five runs of the game already across, Raymond Perez came on in relief for the Bulldogs and managed to shut down the Sharks the rest of the way. He allowed just one hit through three and two-third innings, while striking out three and issuing two free passes.
