Gonzalez, Ferreira Carry Everglades In 3-2 Win Over Western
Baseball is a game of opportunities, and when you take advantage of said opportunities at the right moments, you can afford to make a mistake here or there. Despite only having some success on offense in the first inning, the three runs to start the game proved to be enough for Jorge Julio’s Everglades Gators as they held on for a a 3-2 victory over the Western Wildcats on Tuesday night.
After starter Alfredo Gonzalez worked out of trouble in the first inning and kept the game scoreless, senior Javari Alvin started the bottom of the frame off with a walk and advanced to second on an Eduardo Rodriguez single. Following a third single from catcher Manny Rodriguez that loaded the bases, sophomore Bryan Ferreira brought everyone home on a bases-clearing double to right field. Those these three hits were the only ones that would show up on the final box score, it was more than enough for Gators pitching.
Toeing the mound and throwing four-and-a-third innings of efficient ball was Alfredo Gonzalez, who allowed just five hits and didn’t allow an earned run to reach the place. Gonzalez kept the Gators (5-6) in the game before turning the ball over to reliever Justin Carrillo in the fifth inning. Carrillo, who has battled some control issues early on in the season, struck out five and walked none in his 38 pitches of work.
Though the box score shows that he recorded the loss by allowing all three runs, Austin Winsor rebounded from a tough first inning to throw 65 percent of his pitches for strikes, Winsor struck out six and allowed just two base runners — one of whom reached due to an error — to reach base after the rough start to the game. Both of the Wildcats’ runs were due to errors, but the team did shine on the basepaths with Brannigan Hart, Erik Lassman, and Anthony Leary all stealing bases.
