Highlights, Scores and Recaps for Thursday, March 17th, 2016
It was a “7 letter game.” There was only one outcome for Pompano Beach: A must win. Pine Crest made that tough, however, by building a seemingly insurmountable lead. Against the odds, the Tornadoes spun through the adversity and battled back from a nine-run deficit to win 11-10 on Thursday in a pivotal game in 5A-14.
The win puts Pompano (8-5, 5-4) in third place in the district with Pine Crest (6-6, 5-5) right behind at number four.
Down 9-0 going to fifth inning, Vinnie Costello hit a two-out grand slam to make it 9-4. After Pine Crest scored on an error to go up 10-4, Pompano added two runs in the sixth to narrow the deficit to 10-6. Conrad Schlegel, who got the win, came in and pitched a scoreless sixth to hold things down.
Pompano scored five in the top of the seventh on the strength of a three-run home run by Max Stein, who finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Trevor Kniskern came in for the save.
“[Stein] started the season as our leadoff hitter, has not hit well early on but has walked a lot,” Tornadoes Manager Joe Giummule said. “His OBP is good considering his average. We decided to move him up to the two hole, so he sees some fastballs and he is able to bunt well, hit and run, and so he got three hits tonight, none bigger than the three-run homer. Max plays center and every position on the field. He is our most gifted athlete on the team.”
Guimmule said Costello has made adjustments to improve his offense.
“We been working on Vinnie letting the ball get deep and to use all the field,” he said. “We have made him choke up on the bat and have stressed not to try and do to much. It worked out on a opposite-field, grand-slam blast.”
Giummule said “the unsung hero is Peyton Trautman, who came on in relief and stopped the bleeding. It was close to being a 10-run rule.”
Bobby Aseere went 4-for-5 with a run and RBI, and Nick Marcantonio added two hits and scored for the Tornadoes.
Michael Rothenberg went 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs to lead the Pine Crest offense. Cam Andre went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jordan Schulefand went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Those three had consecutive hits to key a five-run fourth inning for the Panthers.
