Gutierrez, Coral Springs Christian Hold On For 8-5 Victory
As the regular season winds down, Steve Carp and the Coral Springs Christian Crusaders have hit an unfortunate rough patch, going 3-4 in their past seven games to fall under .500 with just a handful of games remaining. Luckily for Carp, his men haven’t quite waved the white flag yet as they exploded for eight runs in a victory over the Brighton Bengals on Tuesday afternoon.
Moving to 9-9 on the season with just two games left, Carp’s Crusaders were helped by the performance of Keving Gutierrez. Excelling both on the mound and at the plate, Gutierrez had two hits, including a fifth-inning solo home run, in three at-bats while also striking out seven innings in five-and-a-third innings of work.
Gutierrez wasn’t the only Crusader to enjoy a good night at the plate, as teammate Louis Pagan drove in four runs and got things started for Carp’s team with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. The Crusaders then added another run in that inning when Gutierrez singled to right field to score Pagan.
The Bengals tied things up with a three spot in the top of the second inning thanks to a one-out rally that included three walks, but it was all Crusaders the rest of the way. Coby Mayo broke the tie with an RBI single to score Kyle Cattrysse in the bottom of the second, while Pagan drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth to make the lead 5-3.
On the night as a whole, the Crusaders showed fantastic patience as they drew eight walks. Austin Marks recorded the save for the Crusaders, pitching 1.2 innings of two-hit ball after relieving Gutierrez in the sixth.
