Somerset Tops North Broward In 5A-14 Battle
Somerset Academy won its 11th in a row and 20th this season as it downed North Broward Prep 7-4 in a pivotal 5A-14 game Thursday. Brandon Valentin and Ryan Cabarcas combined on a five-hitter as the Panthers (20-3) improved to 9-1 in the district.
The Eagles dropped to 12-11 overall and 6-4 in the district.
The Panthers came out strong from the start and never trailed as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Derek Cartaya walked to lead off the inning and came in on Kenny Moreno-Costa’s home run.
North Broward came back in the bottom of the inning. Aaron Antonini led off with a base hit to right. After Nick Bohrer grounded out, Dillon Belle and Muhammed Eid walked. Evan McKendry was put out on a foul tip, and Dylan Ogozaly walked to allow Antonini to score.
Jack Khawly singled and stole home to put the Panthers up 3-1 in the top of the second.
After a scoreless third, North Broward narrowed the margin on Antoni’s homer to right.
Somerset put up four in the top of the fifth to widen its lead. Cartaya and Franco Perdomo walked following Jordan Quijano’s leadoff fly out. Ricardo Leonett then flied out and Moreno-Costa, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, was intentionally walked to load the bases. Luis Chavez walked, allowing Perdomo to score. Juan F. Teixera smacked a double to center to drive in Moreno-Costa. A strikeout stopped the bleeding.
The Eagles remained undaunted to scored twice in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. Ty Marsh led off with a walk before two consecutive strikeouts. Antonini’s single to right scored Marsh, and courtesy runner Chase McBean scored when Bohrer walked. A flyout ended the inning.
