University Rallies To Beat Calvary Christian In District Bout
The Calvary Christian Academy Eagles played host to 4A-7 rival University Sharks Tuesday afternoon. The match-up pitted two of the top teams in the most recent addition of the Broward Power Rankings. The Eagles led the game by a run late, but in the seventh inning RBIs from Buddy Hayward and Jack Schmidt rallied the Sharks to a 4-3 district victory.
The Sharks entered the seventh inning, down one and had been held scoreless for the last four innings. That changed when Standifer scored his second run of the game to tie the game at three a piece. Then, two batters later with two outs, Schmidt sent a line-drive into left field that scored Andrew Grinburg for the go-ahead run.
Schmidt then made is way to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and after getting into early trouble, struck out the side to end the game and pick up the save.
The Eagles (12-6, 7-2) are coming off their first loss in seven games and quickly jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first inning on a run scored by Ben Rozenblum. The Sharks (16-5, 7-4) quickly responded by scoring two runs off of Eagles starter Luis Ezra to take the 2-1 lead in the second. First, a double to left field by Sammy Guillorme scored Michael Glantz to tie the game. Then a passed ball opened the door for Cole Standifer to score the go-ahead run.
For Ezra, the two runs were the only two he allowed. He threw 100 pitches over 5.2 innings, striking out six and walking four in an impressive performance.
The Eagles regained the lead and put Ezra in line for the win by scoring a run each in the fourth and fifth inning. Victor Pimentel tied the game in the fourth when he came home on an error by the Sharks infield. Then, Pimental brought in the go-ahead run the next inning on a single to center field that scored Daley Weppner.
