HSBN Scholarship Essay Entry: Diego Segnini
Diego Segnini tells his thoughts on the shutdown.
Diego Segnini, #11, from the Deerfield Beach Bucks, is a pitcher/outfielder that graduates with the class of 2020. Diego and his Bucks teammates had a strong year going when when their season was cut short. He gave us some insight into what the past few months have meant to him.
Essay:
This Coronavirus probably has to be the worst thing that has ever happened in my life. Many of my senior baseball teammates also feel the same way. This was our first best year in a decade at Deerfield Beach High School: we were 10-2 and still going strong.
At first when we heard the news about the season getting postponed we all were okay with it, “maybe we can all use a break.” Eventually one week turned into two weeks, then into a month, then two months, and now the full semester has been cancelled.
This especially has hurt all of us seniors, because many of us were trying to go to college and continue playing baseball. It was our last year to make an impact on the field, plus our annual spring break baseball trip to Georgia was cancelled completely. During this trip many of us would bond on the long bus ride, in the hotel rooms, and playing top tier teams in the Northwest Florida area.
My main concern and problem with this virus is how much I’ve worked in the past year and a half to try and have my best season and receive a college scholarship just for the opportunity to be taken away by this worldwide pandemic.
Being truthful, at first I was glad to know we had a break from baseball, but now I know all of us wish to be back in school, with our friends and on the diamond playing the game we all love so much. I miss seeing my favorite teachers, who I’m probably never going to see again since we are not returning for the rest of the school year. I miss seeing my friends in between classes, and I even miss the smell of the school.
What especially sucks for us seniors is that all our senior events have been cancelled like Grad Bash, Prom, Senior Breakfast. Although Graduation has not been cancelled yet, I’m having a strong feeling it will at least be postponed.
Us baseball players who are seniors won’t be able to experience our senior night, where our team gives us a ceremony to recognize us for our accomplishments. There are things outside of school I miss too, like working on my baseball skills, and like going to the weight room and practice.
Most of us are ready to graduate from school, but believe it or not, school brings us together as one: that’s how me make friends, play sports, learn and educate ourselves. If it were not for school every single one of us would sit at home and probably watch Netflix all day.
To conclude, there are many things we all take for granted every single day of our lives. Right now during this hard time we all realize that we should embrace those moments and enjoy them rather than just sit on our phones and complain.
I hope I get to play on the diamond one more time with my team of the last four years, as well as play at the next level. I can’t wait to sit down with my friends without having to worry about social distancing and talk about our future and baseball.
Most of all I just want things to return to normal.
