HSBN All-Star Weekend Spectacular Set For June 2nd – 4th
There have been some memorable moments through the years in the HSBN Broward vs. Miami Senior All-Star Games and Awards Event, but the 2023 games are shaping up to provide a moment for the ages, as part of 2023 HSBN All-Star & Futures Weekend.
The event has been set for Saturday, June 3rd, with festivities kicking off with the Private school game at 2pm, and the Public game at 6:30PM. The game has found a new home at one of the top facilities in South Florida, Archbishop McCarthy High School.
“This event has become a staple in the high school community, and has meant so much for these seniors through the years. We are overjoyed that we have found a partner in Archbishop McCarthy, that understands the magnitude of the event for these seniors, and the entire high school community down here in South Florida,” said HSBN Vice-President Anthony Uttariello.
For McCarthy, hosting the event was a no-brainer.
“This game year after year has had such a positive impact on the community, and watching these seniors compete one last time, makes it exciting for it to be on our campus.” said Vorachek.
The games themselves, along with the awards ceremony during the games, are enough to create anticipation, but this year, HSBN is doing something special, a once-in-a-lifetime tribute.
Between the two games, HSBN will be honoring the “Legends of the Dugout”, coaches who have been managers here in Broward and Miami for over 20 years.
“Honoring the Legends of the Dugout is something that is long overdue,” said Vorachek. “To have that many coaches that shaped high school baseball down here in South Florida, in one place, is going to be special.”
These coaches have dedicated their lives to developing student-athletes, and they will finally get the respect they have earned.
“As a longtime coach in Broward County, this has been a long time coming. Honoring the coaches who have put in the time on the field for decades. HSBN got it right with this idea,” said Douglas Manager Todd Fitz-Gerald.
In addition to being one of the coaches honored, Fitz-Gerald will be managing the Broward Public team.
“It’s always fun coaching an all-star game, but being able to coach it while honoring some longtime legendary coaches, and friends, makes it a truly special event.”
Over in the Miami dugout, managing the public team, there also will be one of the coaches being honored. South Dade’s Fred Burnside, who is retiring this season after spending almost 50 years in Miami-Dade dugouts, is excited about the opportunity.
“It truly will be an honor to celebrate the 2023 baseball season with the best from Miami-Dade and Broward counties,” said Burnside.
As for the private schools, both the Broward and Miami teams are being led by coaches who understand the history of the game here in South Florida. For Broward, University School Manager Dan Rovetto grew up on these fields, and played for legendary Manager Pat McQuaid at Nova.
“What a great evening we have to look forward to,” said Rovetto. “Not only will the best talent be on the field from Miami-Dade and Broward counties, but even more importantly, we will have the opportunity to honor and recognize some of the founders in coaching. I, personally, am humbled, to be able to share the field that evening with some of the best leaders in our game.”
The Miami private school all-stars will be led by one of those legends, Columbus’ Joe Weber, and he was equally excited about participating in the event.
“I am very excited to be a part of the Legends of the Dugout ceremony, and equally elated to coach the Miami private school team.”
No matter whether you grew up in Broward or Miami, this year’s All-Star event figures to be a day full of reminiscing, while sending the 2023 seniors out in style. There will also be a MAJOR announcement during the Legends of the Dugout ceremony.
In addition to the all-star games, the HSBN Future Stars games will be held during All-Star Weekend, with the Freshman-aged game taking place Friday night, and the Sophomore and Junior-aged games on Sunday.
“Part of our senior all-star weekend is always to also showcase the up-and-coming players in Miami and Broward, and we believe this year, we have some of the top players in each of those age groups competing for their counties,” said Uttariello.
The senior all-star rosters will be announced on Thursday, April 27th, and the details of the event can be found in the links below!
