West Broward Wins Slugfest Over Western For 7A-14 Crown
The West Broward offense has been the driving force for the team all season, and on Thursday night it came through again when it was needed the most. The Bobcats fell behind the Western Wildcats in each of the first two innings of the District 7A-14 championship, and each time it answered back to retake control.
After going ahead again with two runs in the fourth inning, West Broward eventually pulled away for a 9-6 victory that earns the district trophy. It is the third district title for the Bobcats (16-8), and first since 2021. The program also celebrated its first district championship in 2016.
Trailing by a run in the fourth, senior Mason Elrod delivered an RBI double that plated junior Alejandro Sardinas and evened the score. An infield RBI ground out off the bat of senior Andres Cruz allowed sophomore Andrew Alvarez to score the winning run. West Broward then added two unearned runs in the sixth for some extra insurance cushion.
The Wildcats (14-10) were the defending 7A-14 champions, and they went right to work in defense of that title by quickly jumping out with two runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Tyler Jenkins doubled down the left field line to drive in senior Cristian Alvarez, who got it started with a one-out single. Junior Danny Ortega followed with an RBI single that drove in senior Luis Lorenzo.
After the Bobcats responded to even it back up, Jenkins again put his squad in front with a grand slam home run in the top of the second inning. Jenkins piled up five RBI on the night, while junior Danny Ortega went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
