Big Innings Lift Somerset Over Pine Crest
Two big innings propelled Somerset Academy to a 15-5 win at Pine Crest in a battle of Panthers on Tuesday afternoon. The Somerset Panthers broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the third inning, then put the game out of reach with an eight-run sixth after the Pine Crest Panthers had clawed back to within 7-4 after five innings.
“The boys came out to swing the bat,” Somerset Academy manager Juan Mora said.
Eight different Somerset players scored runs, paced by Panthers’ lead-off hitter Jon Mora. The Somerset center fielder crossed the dish three times. Jorge Gonzalez, Tristan Sierra, Alan Sanchez, Eric Vasquez, Jr., and Jayden Ramirez each scored twice.
Jeandro Perez led a nine-hit attack by going 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBI. Ramirez added two hits and drove in a run.
Brandon Mon highlighted the sixth-inning outburst with a two-run homer. Gonzalez and Sanchez also drove in two runs apiece.
Kevin Martinez pitched well in relief of Somerset starter Liam DeCicco. Martinez threw 1.1 innings allowing just one unearned run while striking out one.
“It was just a complete ballgame,” said Juan Mora. “Our pitchers came in and threw strikes.”
Pine Crest made a game of it with three runs in the fourth. The rally began with two outs and Cooper Obst delivered a two-run single, scoring both Cole Kaplan, who started it all with a two-out single, and Troy Ceritelli. Ian Hurt also added an RBI-single in the frame, chasing home Michael Marber.
They added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Jake Milton. Rian Greenberg tagged and scored to make it a 7-4 game.
Somerset Academy (9-10) visits Monsignor Pace for a 7 p.m. Wednesday game.
Pine Crest (8-6) returns to action on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. game at Highlands Christian.
