Glades’ Pitchers Combine For No-Hitter Over Seminole Ridge
Watching a young team develop and improve over the course of the season is one of the more rewarding feelings for most high school baseball managers. Each turn of the corner marks a step in the player’s growth, each successful experience a tool to recall for future challenges. Friday night marked just such an occasion, as the young Coral Glades Jaguars celebrated a season highlight with a no-hit victory over the Seminole Ridge Hawks.
“I’m really proud of this group of student-athletes for how they’ve been playing all year,” Coral Glades Manager Joe Franco said. “We normally have four to six rookies in the lineup mixed in with a few guys with varsity experience. I’m even more proud of how classy they are and how great of teammates they are to one another.”
Freshman Jason Lincoln and junior Kyle Fernandes combined to hold the Hawks hitless for a 10-0 home win. Lincoln picked up the win with four shutout innings, as he struck out five and walked two. The veteran Fernandes then came on to close things out with two clean frames that included four strikeouts.
The Jaguars (9-6) got plenty of offense to support the efforts on the mound. Glades jumped right out in front in the top of the first inning and led the entire way, while also scoring in every inning.
Three different players all had two hits each to lead the offense. Senior Aydan Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run, while junior Brayden Hoskins went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run and junior Tyler Villanueva was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Freshman Cloevens Challenger delivered three RBI and sophomore Shawn Whoriskey scored three times.
The defense also did its part in turning in a clean line for the night. After committing nine errors over its last four games, the Jaguar defense did not have any errors on Friday.
