Home Run Derby Kicks Off HSBN Fall Classic Tournament This Week
The long-anticipated HSBN Fall Classic Tournament has finally arrived, and that is good news for coaches, players, and fans of high school baseball in South Florida. The tournament brings together 24 teams from Broward and Palm Beach Counties, with only one emerging as a champion.
The event will run in three stages. The first round (Nov. 7th-12) will be a round robin format, with six, four team brackets. The winners of the six brackets, along with two wild card teams, will move on to round two. In round two (Nov. 15-17) the eight remaining teams will pair off and play a two out of three series, leaving the final four. The semi-final games of the tournament are set to start on Monday, November 21st, with the championship the next night.
The Fall Classic will also have a younger age tournament, pitting eight JV-aged teams against each other. The younger aged tournament will run under the same format at the older division, with the exception of skipping the semi-final stage.
To kick the entire event off, HSBN is hosting the Power Showcase Home Run Derby at Flanagan this Saturday night at 6PM. The home run derby has over 30 players entered, many of whom are top players from Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade Counties.
The event will be filled with excitement, with the winner getting a paid entry into the Power Showcase World Classic Home Run Derby at Chase Field in Arizona, home field of the MLB Diamondbacks.
Bryce Harper has participated in the event in the past, but last year it was Daniel Vogelbach, from Bishop Verot HS in Fort Myers, Florida, that brought Power Showcase into the mainstream.
Vogelbach broke a world record at the event with a 508 foot bomb. He also enthralled the crowd by hitting 5 home runs in a row 3 different times.
The Power Showcase Home Run Derby in Arizona runs from December 27-29 and draws 100, invitation only players from around the world.
With only 100 spots available, the winner of the HSBN event will join some of the top power hitters in the world. Airfare to Arizona will also be included in the prize (a total value of $1,800).
The derby at Flanagan will feature music, food, a live announcer, and much more. Make plans now to bring out the entire family for a fun-filled evening on the diamond with some of the best hitters in the tri-county area providing the entertainment.
